The two bandits who were nabbed moments after they robbed a Chinese national on Tuesday have been remanded to jail.
The men, Richard Jairam, 33, unemployed, of Mon Repos, East Coast Demerara, and Esmond Baptiste, 33, a fisherman of Liverpool Village, Corentyne, Berbice appeared on Friday before Magistrate Rhondell Weaver, at the Fort Wellington Magistrate’s Court on a charge of Robbery with Violence .
They are accused of robbing Shan Goasu, 47, a businessman of Regent Street, Georgetown on Tuesday. They were remanded to jail until July 21 when the matter will be called again.
The police had acted quickly and nabbed the two bandits after they had robbed the business man who was travelling in a car with them on the way to Georgetown.
About 14:15 hrs Goasu, 47, a Chinese national was on his way from Suriname to Georgetown. He reportedly joined the taxi at Springlands with the two accused. In the vicinity of No. 2 Village, West Coast Berbice, the driver took a detour south of the main road into a lonely street where they robbed Goasu.
The man was choked into unconsciousness and relieved of his belongings including one gold chain, one gold ring, $300,000, one Iphone, a passport and S’name $2,500. He was then dumped out of the car without his shirt.
Goasu, subsequently ran towards the road where he was rescued by a minibus driver who took him to the Blairmont Police Station and a report was made.
After taking the report, the ranks placed a phone call to the man’s missing phone which gave them a location. The police tracked the number and came up on the Church View International Hotel where the men had just booked into.
The police swooped down on the location and arrested the men. A search was conducted on their belongings and $200,000, S’name $2500, one Iphone, a passport and a bag containing clothing belonging to Goasu were found.
The men are claiming their innocence and are blaming the taxi driver. They said that they could not do anything and after committing the act, the taxi driver returned to East Berbice and they decided to book into a hotel. They said that the taxi driver sold the stolen items to them.
A search is continuing for the car and driver who reportedly collected the missing $100,000 as his part in the robbery.
