Police in B Division has formed another youth and sports club in their quest to do things differently and get youths gainfully occupied and away from social ills and illicit activities.
Commander Assistant Commissioner Ian Amsterdam upon his taking over the reins of the Police B Division Berbice has been leading his ranks on a relentless drive to get them involved in many community based activities and relationships. According to Amsterdam there are many new initiatives all of which helps to enhance their relationship with the community. The initiatives also help in crime fighting. Since the public will be more understanding and open to give the police information.
Some of the initiatives were started by predecessors Assistant Commissioners Brian Joseph and Christopher Griffith, while some are his ideas most of which deals with youths, community activities and education.
Recently a new youth and sport club was opened at Fort Ordnance Housing Scheme, East Canje to cater for the youth of the now thriving Housing scheme. Information revealed that a group was in existence in the area some time ago, but had become dormant. However, with the arrival of Amsterdam, efforts were made for the group to be reactivated which came to fruition during the past week.
The youths were spoken to by Officer in charge of the Police No1 Sub Division (New Amsterdam, Canje, East Coast and East Bank Berbice) Deputy Superintendent Guy Nurse, Community Relations Officer Assistant Superintendent Keith Williams, Station Sergeant of the Central Police Station Marlon O’Donoghue and Corporal Narine, female Lance Corporal Dawn Chesney and Community Liaison Officer female Constable Brutus. Those in attendance were spoken to about the purpose, benefits and other importance of the getting themselves organized and in to groups.
They were told of the importance of having a sound education, the bad effects of drugs and consequences of being involved in illicit activities and social ills, teenage pregnancy and being school drop outs.
A number of other police officers were among the group that travelled to the Fort Ordnance Primary School where the inaugural meeting was held.
A number of sport gear and educational materials were promised to the youths by the police including cricket, football and circle tennis gear.
The efforts are part of the police social crime prevention programme in an effort to get persons especially youths involved in a positive live style.
