In 1997 Guyanese William France became the first Amputee to ever compete in the Boston Marathon in the USA before forming the William France Differently Abled Athletics Club on August 12 of the next year.

Since then the President of his club has had many achievements including being the only Amputee to receive two National Awards and has participated in 21 Marathons, 17 of them overseas.
The now retired 59-year-old France came out of retirement on May 21 when he and five other Amputees and two females (Indi Ramnauth & Yvonne DeAbreu) who are in Wheel Chairs participated in an approximately 26-mile walk from Mahaica to the Independence Arch in Brickdam Georgetown, which started at mid-night. The seven and a half hour walk concluded yesterday morning.
Among the officials that were invited that turned out were Director of Sport Christopher Jones and former Prime Minister Samuel Hinds. Jones assisted in distributing the trophies available for the participants. France thanked all who supported the successful event, which was in recognition of Guyana’s 50th Jubilee Independence celebrations.
Among those that supported the effort were DDL, Ramchand Auto Sales, Rays Auto Sales, DeSilva’s Optical, Guy oil, Humphrey’s Bakery and West Indies Sports Complex.
