Skipper Chris Barnwell led from the front as DCC yesterday lifted the Championship Trophy after taking first innings points in their GCA’s GISE, Trophy Stall & Star Party two-day Division One Cricket Final against GDF at Bourda.
The 29-year-old Barnwell, who has played 41 First-Class games and also represented the Royal Challengers Bangalore in the IPL and the Amazon Warriors in the CPL, took the Lions’ share of the trophies up for grabs when the Final was called off just before the last hour started by Match Referee Omar Bacchus and the two Captains.
At that stage Kevin Ramdeen and Ishwar Singh were in the middle of an entertaining fourth wicket stand which was already worth 55 runs after Barnwell had followed up his 3-36 in GDF’s first innings by ripping out the first three batsmen to leave the Army on the ropes at 10-3.
Scores: GDF (160 & 66-1), DCC (302)
DCC began the final day, which did not start until 11:10 due to water on the edge of the ‘square’ caused by overnight rain, on 184-5 and lost Kemol Savory (2) four minutes into the days play as Berbice and Guyana pacer Romario Shepherd took the first of his five wickets.
Dennis Squires (9) was bowled by the 21-year-old Shepherd, who took 3-37 in his only game for Guyana in the Regional Super50, to leave the Queenstown unit who began the day with one hand on the title due to their first innings lead, on 197-7.
West Indies U-19 opener Tevin Imlach who retired hurt with cramps in his forearm on Saturday afternoon, resumed his innings and along with Guyana player, Paul Wintz, batted comfortable on a flat track in sunny conditions.
Imlach, who scored an unbeaten century in the semi-finals against GCC, reached his fifty with a push for a single aided by four fours and a six and stroked pacer Nial Smith for a couple of fours to move into the 70s.
But he wasted an ideal opportunity to register back-to-back tons when he was stumped off Ramdeen for 73 at 238-8 after adding 41 with Wintz.
The 30-year-old Wintz, who has a fifty in his three First-Class games for Guyana, was joined by Dexter George and Wintz was the dominant partner in a 49-run stand.
The Berbician, who scored a first division double century for Young Warriors against Rose Hall Town in 2009, hammered Andre O’Neil for four boundaries before he edged fellow Berbician Nial Smith to first slip where Ramdeen, another Berbician, took a good catch. Wintz batted for 200 minutes and his 49 was decorated with seven fours.
Totaram Bishun (9*) joined George (15) who was taken at slip off Ramdeen who finished with 2-12 to support Shepherd’s 5-39.
Leon Andrews was bowled by Barnwell for a duck, Quacey McPherson was LBW for his second naught of the match and Hakeem Hinds (5) was LBW as Barnwell showed his all round quality at the local level.
Ramdeen and Singh then went after the bowlers with disdain and it was somewhat strange that they agreed to end the game before the ‘last hour’ had begun with half-centuries for the taking.
Barnwell copped the Most Runs in the tournament (420), MVP of zone ‘B’, the batsman with the highest score (254 vs UG), the bowling performance in the Final (6-71) and the Man-of-the-Match award.
Imlach took the prize for the highest score in the final (73), Squires (Most wickets 19), Kemol Savory (Most dismissals), Ramdeen (MVP zone ‘A’) and Heymant Persaud (b/b 7-18 for UG v GYO).
GCA President Roger Harper and representatives of the sponsors all spoke at the Presentation Ceremony.
