National Sport Commission took a major step in its quest to promote Circle Tennis with the staging of a workshop yesterday at the Kildonan Community Centre.
The workshop attracted schools both primary and secondary from Crabwood Creek to Fyrish which includes Black Bush Polder.
Ministry of Education Department of Sport, Sports Officer A Munroe said that the workshop signaled the beginning of a series of workshops to be held across Guyana leading up to a regional championship during this 50th Independence year celebration.
In delivering the feature address, Munroe stated that this is the first clinic held under the theme ‘Circle Tennis’ taking the Game back to its Glory days. “During the 70s and 80s circle tennis was popular in Guyana, but for the last 10-15 years we have seen tremendous decline. Our aim has always been to ensure that the excitement of playing circle tennis is felt right across the country, and that we have planned a number of tournaments for the year.” he added.
“The NSC would be looking to send special teams to the various regions between March and April not only to show case the sport but assist with setting up of sub associations and facilitate training ahead of the championships.
National Sports Commission Board members Seon Erskine and Inga Henry were also present. Henry in her brief remark welcomed the participants and charged them to ensure the sport is played in the schools.
The clinic was facilitated by Munroe with assistance from Michael Trotman, Marsha Wong and David Wren.
Meanwhile another workshop will be held on the East Bank of Demerara on Thursday January 28, at the Timehri Red Ground (Hype Park Community Centre) commencing at 09:00hrs and will involved school primary and secondary schools, clubs and religion organisations.
