22 femicide cases recorded in 2025

Kaieteur News – Twenty-two femicide cases were recorded in Guyana in 2025, representing a sharp increase from the 13 cases in 2024, according to the 2026 National Budget document.

Femicide is defined by the United Nations as the intentional killing of women or girls because of their gender, driven by discrimination, unequal power relations, harmful social norms, or gender stereotypes. It is considered the most extreme manifestation of violence against women and girls, often linked to intimate partner violence and other forms of abuse.

Despite the rising femicide figures, the 2026 Budget outlines several social intervention efforts undertaken in 2025. According to the document, 4,970 women benefited from empowerment programmes, while 86 sensitisation and awareness initiatives promoting gender equality were conducted. A further 61 programmes and campaigns targeted the elimination of sexual, domestic and gender-based violence.

The budget document also reports 1,823 cases of domestic and gender-based violence during the year, with 55 victims of domestic violence and sexual offences receiving shelter services. In 2024 there were 1,863 reported cases of domestic and gender-based violence.

Further, the Ministry of Human Services and Social Security has stated that its overarching objective remains the promotion of social welfare and the elimination of discrimination and violence against women, with strategies focused on prevention, protection, empowerment and support for vulnerable groups.

In January, 16-year-old Janelly David was beaten to death and left in a hammock in Region One by her partner Eon Moore. Also in the same month, 34-year-old Bibi Fazila Ally was killed by her ex-partner Bidraj Ganesh. Her body was left in a pool of blood and was discovered by her eight-year-old son.

In February, 27-year-old, Kenesha Vaughn was shot 12 times by her husband Marlan Da Silva during an argument, while he was allegedly intoxicated at their Diamond Housing Scheme, East Bank Demerara. Also, in the same month, Shameeza Mohamed was brutally beaten by her son-in-law Parsuram Arjune subsequently succumbing to her injuries.

The month of April saw five women losing their lives: Mezona Ronaldo was set on fire by her partner Kevin Cadogan and subsequently succumbed to her injuries. Also, in April Maline La Cruz, her sister Sueann La Cruz and her mother, Waveney La Cruz lost their lives at the hands of her ex-partner Parmanand Ramdehol, when he shot them at their Waiakabra Village, Soesdyke – Linden Highway home. In the same month, 30- year-old Marissa Beete was shot by her ex-boyfriend Ghalee Khan, a convicted drug trafficker. In July, 26-year-old Jenel Pollydore was shot dead at a wedding by the father of her child, Shaka Phillips, also known as ‘Concrete Man’, a 21-year-old resident of Central Amelia’s Ward, Linden.

In August, Teekadai Solomon was shot at least 10 times by her husband Alroy Solomon who then turned the weapon on himself ending his life. He also shot their son during the ordeal. In the same month, 45-year-old Bibi Shazida Hanif was stabbed to death by her ex-husband Martin True.

In September, 50-year-old Paula Abraham was stabbed to death by her husband, Ishwar Singh, at their Second Street, Cummings Lodge, East Coast Demerara house. After committing the act, Singh set the house on fire. He subsequently died while receiving medical attention at the Georgetown Public Hospital. Also in September, 36-year-old Alisha Narine from Crabwood Creek, Corentyne Berbice, was chopped to death by her reputed husband Ram Singh, known as “Singh,” during an argument.
