Eight years from the date that Powerlifting began its resurgence with ‘Big’ John Edwards and Mervyn ‘Spongy’ Moses’ first international appearance at the 2008 North American Regional Championships, Guyana’s latest in a long line of powerlifters produced its best ever performances to date in its maiden appearance at the recently concluded Commonwealth Championships in British Columbia, Canada.
The Guyanese hauled in a near perfect 8 out of 9 Overall Gold Medals in the various weight classes to stamp its authority as this nation’s best Gold medal haul in indoor sport. Guyana’s powerlifters have now lifted at all the major championships which include the Caribbean, Worlds, South American, Pan American and now the Commonwealth. The team returned home on Monday.
