youth and sports organisation, Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, Hilbert Foster when that entity’s cricket teams hosted the 3rd edition of the Ansa McAl Awards of Excellence Programme at the St. Francis Community Developers Training Centre on Friday last.
Three outstanding Berbicians who have had long outstanding careers in the field of Education, Sports and Community Development were rewarded and they were Margaret Ann Fingal-Beaton – Education, Kawalpattie Dayaram – Community Development and Desiree Lancaster – Sports. Margaret Ann Fingal-Beaton had a successful career as a Teacher attaining the position of Assistant Regional Education Officer before retiring while Dayaram has served residents of the Canje as President of the East Canje Humanitarian Society, a non profit, non religious social organization.
The aim of that organization is to make a positive difference in the lives of the less fortunate. Desiree Lancaster, a nine-time national Table Tennis champion was honoured for an outstanding career in sports and as a role model/mentor to young Berbicians as a certified Level One Coach. Foster praised the three awardees for their contributions towards the development of Berbice and for making a positive difference in the lives of youths, the elderly and less fortunate.
Foster in recognized the awardees as living heroes who deserve to receive the Ansa McAl Award of Excellence and urged them to uphold the high standards they have set themselves. He challenged the awardees to continue being positive role models to youths as they fight against getting involved in drugs, crime and the evil ways of satan.
The Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club, he stated would continue to strive to make sure that every living hero in the Ancient County is recognized and honoured under several Tribute programmes.
Minister of Education Dr. Rupert Roopnarine and Director of Sports, Christopher Jones both congratulated the Awardees for being honoured and expressed gratitude to them for their contributions to Guyana.
Dr. Roopnarine stated that too many Guyanese leave our country when we need them to play a part in our development. The Minister also saluted the work of the Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club and its parent body, the St. Francis Community Developers, describing both organisations as role models.
Awardee Margaret Ann Fingal-Beaton expressed gratitude to the Club and Ansa McAl for honouring her and colleagues. She stated that they felt privileged to be recognized for their contributions to the development of Guyana.
Beaton also praised the outstanding work of the Club, calling it a blessing to the Township of Rose Hall Town and the County of Berbice. Each of the awardees was selected by a panel of judges headed by veteran Berbice Journalist Gregory Rambarran.
Members of the public were invited and submitted a total of 24 nominations which were under three sub-headings. Each of the Awardees received a Medal, Certificate of Excellence, a trophy and a Special Ansa McAl hamper.
The Award of Excellence was organized by the Rose Hall Town Farfan & Mendes Under-15, Pepsi Under-19 and Intermediate, Bakewell Under-17, Gizmos & Gadgets Under-21 and First Division and Metro Female Teams which expressed gratitude to Ms Beverley Harper and the Management of Ansa McAl for their sponsorship of the Programme.
