L’Aventure Secondary dealt the first blow in the Region 3 leg of this year’s Digicel School’s Football Championships firing back in the closing moments to defeat West Demerara 2-1 when the fourth edition of Guyana’s

largest football competition kicked off yesterday at the spanking new, Leonora Football ground.
Following the meeting of the teams participating in Region 3 by Digicel Head of Marketing, Ms. Jacqueline James and Director of Sport Mr. Christopher Jones and the official kick off when Digicel CEO Mr. Kevin Kelly joined James and Jones, West Demerara and L’Aventure set about entertaining the crowd of mostly school children whilst seeking to advance in this knock-out format.
It was the West Demerara side that enjoyed the opening exchanges and established themselves as favorites to win the game and advance at the expense of their opponents. They looked much more assured in offence and defence than L’Aventure and netted the first goal which was no surprise.
It was an appropriate goal on the opening day of competition, witnessed by the top brass of the sponsor and a top sporting official from the government.
West Demerara’s Jeiel Jansen collected the ball midway in his half and with daft skills and
limber maneuverings evaded all that L’Aventuer had to offer in terms of defenders before blasting the ball into the back of the nets to the cheers of his teammates and fellow students in the 13th minute.
West Demerara continued to dominate L’Aventure for the remainder of the first half and indeed for almost the entire 70 minute encounter. Many were the chances that they created and should have converted at least four more goals but failed miserably so to do.
Muffed chances always comes back to haunt you and it certainly did for West Demerara as in the final 15 minutes they showed signs of tiring which played right into the hands of L’Aventure who found the equalizer following a good period of domination.
It was their number 10 player, Dan Boston who delivered the neutralizing goal in the 62nd minute. Boston beat the goalkeeper at the near post with a well taken shot. It was the goal that broke the back of the West Demerara lads.
As the minutes ticked away and it seemed like the match was heading for a draw and subsequent
penalty kicks, L’Aventure had other ideas and with one minute to go, rocked the back of the West Demerara nets compliments of an Adewole Bowman strike in the 69th minute.
The win for L’Aventure means that they will advance to play the winner of game five of this zone between Patentia and Goed Fortuin Secondary Schools who will face off on June 24 at the Den Amstel ground.
Meanwhile, action will continue today also at Den Amstel when Vergenoegen Secondary match skills with Zeeburg Secondary from 15:30hrs. Stewartville and Endeavour will square off tomorrow at Leonora; Uitvlugt face Vreed-en-Hoop on June 23; defending Zone champions Leonora oppose Professional Learning Institute on June 25th, while St. John’s will match skills with Essequibo Islands on June 26 after which the respective winners will then oppose each other.
The Zone final is set for July 5th at Leonora.
