The rapidly declining standard of the senior Inter-County four-day cricket competition
was highlighted by the second round results with Berbice beating Essequibo inside two days at DCC and Demerara whipping the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) Development team in the first session of the third day at Everest yesterday despite an attractive half-century from 17-year-old National under-19 player Kemo Paul.
Paul fought fire with fire yesterday as he took his overnight six to 73 before he was ninth out after batting for 185 minutes, facing 98 balls and hitting 10 fours and two sixes to prolong the one-sided contest longer than Demerara had anticipated.
Set 184 to avoid an innings defeat, the GCB Development X1 began the day on 38-5, still needing another 146 runs to make Demerara bat a second time and were dismissed for 169 inside the first session to lose by an innings and 15 runs with a day and two sessions to spare.
Paul Wintz, the 28-year-old medium pacer, who has played three First-Class matches, picked up two wickets yesterday to finish with 4-69, while Amir Khan, who on Thursday scored his maiden Inter-County century batting as night watchman, ended with 2-33.
Scores: GCB Development X1 156 & 169, Demerara 338
After losing two quick wickets in the space of a run on the easy paced track which had a little bounce and turn for the spinners, Paul featured in two useful partnerships but they were too little and too late to save the GCB Combination from an embarrassing defeat in sultry conditions.
Overnight batsman Kemol Savory (9) edged Wintz to slip at 55-6, while one run later Yatesh Dhanpaul (1) was trapped in front by left arm spinner Raj Nanan.
All-rounder Kellon Carmichael, back from a successful overseas stint in Canada, joined Paul and tried to repair the damage with a 55-run eighth wicket stand with both batsmen playing in positive fashion.
Paul counter-attack and upper-cut the impressive Wintz for four behind point before charging the Berbice-born pacer and edging him for another four in the same over before Carmichael (20) was taken at long-off, going after leg-spinner Khan to leave the GCB unit on 101-8.
Paul continued to play his shots and soon reached his half-century and along with National under-19 leg-spinner Steven Sankar, who scored an undefeated 33, frustrated the Demerara attack with an entertaining 40-run ninth wicket partnership before Paul was removed by off-spinner Zaheer Mohamed at 141.
Khan then had Nial Smith (2) LBW to end the match 10 minutes into the 30-minute extra time in the first session provided once a result is likely.
The next round starts on Tuesday with the GCB Development team facing Berbice at Wales and Demerara opposing Essequibo at Bourda and both games are scheduled to commence at 09:30hrs each day.
