Where there is smoke, there is fire. At least, that’s what the large crowd gathered on Lombard Street, Werk-en-Rust anticipated as they watched firefighters worked to gain entry into a building where “smoke” was emanating yesterday.
An alarmed-citizen noticed the smoke coming from the upper flat of the building which houses ‘Christine’s Fashion and Variety Store’ and ‘Tatabu Trading Enterprise,’ and contacted the Guyana Fire Service. Shortly after, a brigade of firefighters arrived on the scene.
At the time, the place was locked tight since both businesses had closed for the day.
Armed with an electric chain saw, a ladder and their fire truck with the lengthy hose, the firefighters worked their way into the top flat of the building to extinguish what they suspected was ‘fire.’
It was around 17:45 hours that they managed to break one of the windows on the left side of the upper flat and cut through the metal grill. It was then that the fire fighters realized that there was no fire.
In fact, city businesswoman, Christine Edun, who operates Christine’s Fashion and Variety Store confessed that the fear of the Chikungunya virus had caused her to “fog” the building.
A seemingly frustrated Edun had pulled up at the scene and was heard saying “Is fog out we fog out the place because everybody get Chikungunya.”
The businesswoman told Kaieteur News that she was forced to leave the dentist because she received a call that the building was on fire. Edun explained that she panicked and hurried to her business place but had soon realised that it was the fogging that had caused the alarm.
“Chikungunya is hitting everyone. We all got it – my daughter went in the hospital for it just the other day. So we decide to fog out the place,” she stated.
The businesswoman expressed thanks to the Guyana Fire Service for the way they handled the situation.
The owner of Tatabu Trading Enterprise had also arrived and opened his half of the building. Even the seemingly confused man questioned the amount of fog that was coming from the building.
After both businesspersons opened their premises, it was confirmed that the cause of the confusion was indeed the chemical fog.
