One-Day tourney starts Thursday
By Sean Devers
The all conquering National Under-19 team which joined Jamaica and Trinidad & Tobago as the only teams to win both Regional titles in the same year by taking the three-day and 50-over titles for the first time in this year’s tournament in Guyana, will make their debut in the 2014 senior Inter-County competition which starts with the 50-over format on Thursday.
The Brian Sattuar led team played unbeaten in both formats and could provided a stern test for their much more senior counterparts as they replace the President’s X1 as the fourth team in the competition in what must be seen as a wonderful developmental plan by the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) for the teenagers to rub shoulders with their more experienced players, many of whom would have played at the Test and First-Class levels.
The Under-19 unit, which includes First-Class players Taignarine Chanderpaul and Shemron Hetmyer, has the ability to beat the County teams, especially in the limited overs version.
On Thursday at Everest they will make history by becoming the first National team to play in this tournament when they face a powerful Berbice line-up even without Test players Devendra Bishoo and Assad Fudadin who will be unavailable due to West Indies ‘A’ duties.
The Berbice pair, along with Essequibo pacer Ronsford Beaton, left this week for a one-month Camp in Barbados before leaving for Sri Lanka where a West Indies ‘A’ first toured in 2005.
Berbice includes Test players, Captain Narsingh Deonarine and his deputy Veerasammy Permaul and team from the Ancient County will start as favorites. They have the best new ball pair in Keon Joseph and Raun Johnson, both with First-Class experience, along with the in-form Jonathan Foo and National Wicketkeeper Anthony Bramble.
The U-19s will have the advantage of spending time together as a team during the Regional tournament and also include Essequibo senior team all-rounder Kemo Paul, Askay Homray, Vice Captain Sharaz Ramcharran, and Wicketkeeper Kemol Savory.
At Wales, Essequibo face-off with home team Demerara who will be without National Captain Leon Johnson but could still prove too strong for the lads from the Cinderella County which plays the least amount of competitive cricket among the three counties.
Demerara will be spearheaded their CPL quartette Skipper Chris Barnwell, Trevon Griffith, Steven Jacobs and Robin Bacchus while Shemroy Barrington, Chanderpaul Hemraj, Zaheer Mohamed, Rajendra Chandrika, Amir Khan and Paul Wintz have all played First-Class cricket and are expected to lend support.
Essequibo will be led by Anthony Adams with unrelated namesake Ricardo Adams as his deputy while siblings Royan and Norman Fredericks will expect support with the bat from Kevon Boodie, Ricardo Peters and former National U-19 player Royston Alkins.
The Four-Day format will get going on September 18 and the teams and fixtures are below:
