A 22-year-old gold miner was granted $100,000 after he was charged for stealing raw gold from an acquaintance.
Garfield France, of Golden Grove, East Coast Demerara appeared before Magistrate Judy Latchman at the Georgetown Magistrates’ Court on Thursday to face a Simple Larceny charge.
The court heard that between August 20 and 21 at Blue Mountain, Cuyuni River, France stole 11.6 penny weight of raw gold belonging to Bernard Singh also known as ‘Mosquito.’
France was represented by Attorney-at-Law, Kevon Bess, who requested that he be released on reasonable bail. Bess said that his client was not a flight risk and has intentions of attending court.
Police Prosecutor, Michael Grant did not object to bail but asked that it be granted in a substantial amount.
The lawyer, however, asked the court to consider the cost of the stolen raw gold, and stated that France is innocent “until proven otherwise.” The gold is valued at $121,800
The Magistrate granted the lawyer’s bail request. France will make his next court appearance before Chief Magistrate Priya Sewnarine-Beharry on September 8.
