Riding high on the success of last season, the University of Guyana rugby team has intensified preparations for all competitions for the remainder of the year.
Yesterday Kaieteur Sport paid a visit to a training session at the Campus where Head Coach Laurie Adonis was spearheading preparations for the Guyana Rugby Football Union organised 10s’ tournament that starts today, at the National Park.
Adonis, who is also a IRB Development Officer, told this newspaper that they are trying to get themselves organise following a break in preparations after the national team returned from Atlanta after capturing the NACRA 15s’ title.
The experienced Coach said that in addition to their participation in the local tournament, the team is also in full preparation to partake in the Tobago Sevens Championship set for December in the Twin Island Republic.
Yesterday the players were seen going through a number of drills all aimed at getting them back in shape to endure the challenge of playing at a high level.
The team which has been together for the past three years has made considerable strides over the period and had a relatively good year last year, winning the Guyana Defence Force Anniversary Sevens Tournament while their performance in other competitions could be described as fairly consistent.
Adonis said he was indeed encouraged by the performances of the players and has among the

goals this season the quest to win more tournaments.
He felt that the team possesses the resources and personnel to be more successful this season and he expects the players to respond to his charge.
Adonis pointed to the players’ steady improvement as reason for at least seven of them being called to the national team with three of them making the final selection for the Atlanta trip.
Those that travelled included Rondell McArthur, Jacques Archibald and Lancelot Adonis and according to the Coach they acquitted themselves very well and were also pivotal in the team’s success.
Adonis in closing extended thanks to the University’s Management, Sports Co-ordinator and all the others whose contribution and support is responsible for where the team is today.
“Our success in such a short space of time is entirely due to their support over the period,” Adonis stated.
