Tickets for Guyana leg go on sale July 1
By Sean Devers
Damien O’Donohoe, CEO of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) yesterday assured Guyanese that the Guyana Cricket Administration Bill, which was recently passed in Parliament, will in no way affect the Guyana leg of the Caribbean Premier League (CPL) T20 cricket tournament which is scheduled to commence on July 17.
Digicel’s Communications Manager, Vidya Sanichara with media workers at the CLP teleconference yesterday.
O’Donohoe was speaking from Trinidad during a teleconference at Digicel’s Kingston Headquarters yesterday morning and informed that preparations for this year’s tournament began almost a year ago to ensure a bigger and better competition in 2014.
The West Indies Cricket Board (WICB) has almost nothing to do with the CPL after selling them the rights to host the tournament.
However, a source close to the WICB informed that in the event that the ‘Bill’ is made Law, the Regional Board will revisit the availability of the Guyanese players on the West Indies team who play for the Guyana Amazon Warriors since the licensing mandates that CPL adheres to all regulations set out by the ICC and WICB.
“We spent a lot of time getting feedback from the players and the fans to ensure a vastly improved event this year” O’Donohoe disclosed.
Dubbed ‘the Biggest Party in Sport’, the second edition of the CPL will be played in St Kitts for the first time. The Leeward Island-nation is set to host the penultimate and the final week which include the semi-finals and final.
A mixture of morning, afternoon and evening fixtures will cater for all audiences across the Caribbean, and ensure that an ever increasing fan base around the globe will be able to catch all of the action from what is set to be an exhilarating six weeks anticipated to be pulsating T20 action.
According to the CPL CEO, a galaxy of former cricket stars including Glen McGrath, Shane Warne, Sir Ian Botham and Brian Lara will be involved in the 30-match tournament while superstar rapper Rick Ross is among the high-profile entertainers set to perform on the final night.
The Guyana Amazon Warriors, who play the opening match of the tournament on July 11 in Grenada, plays three matches in Guyana at the Guyana National Stadium at Providence from July 17.
Tickets will go on sale for the Guyana leg on July 1 with the ‘Warriors’ facing the Red Steel of Trinidad from 19:30 hrs in their opening clash on home soil. The South American based team then face-off with the St Lucia Zouks on July 19 from 16:00hrs before playing their final match at Providence on July 20 when they oppose the Jamaica Tallawahs.
The final game for the home team in Guyana is anticipated to be an epic battle since the Jamaicans cruised to a seven-wicket victory against the ‘Amazon Warriors, in the inaugural final last year at the Queens Park Oval in Trinidad.
Matches this year will be played in Grenada, Antigua, Guyana, Barbados, Trinidad, Jamaica, St Lucia and St Kitts.
