“Confused men with not so hidden agendas,” were the words used by President of the Guyana Football Federation (GFF) Christopher Matthias to describe those who brought a motion of no-confidence against him recently.
Matthias was speaking at a Press Briefing called yesterday to discuss the actions of the disgruntled officials who’re seeking to have the motion up for discussion at the impending Ordinary Congress which had to be deferred to a new date after promoters of the motion agreed to meet within 45 days of the last Congress.
The GFF Boss who has been in charge for just over one year has seen his authority and character being attacked from the onset by members of the ‘old guard’ and those linked to the past regime for reasons which according to him cannot be validated.
He added that the age of enlightenment has arrived and those bent on returning the sport to the period of iron-fisted rule where being sidelined or even ignored was a reality if one dared to question certain actions must realise that FIFA/CONCACAF are no longer tolerant of such deeds.
Matthias said while the GFF still encourages dialogue, the entity will not entertain measures that are not supported by the constitution.
“One cannot simply twist and turn the constitution to suit agendas, the governance of the sport must be guided by the constitution and nothing else.”
He further condemned the actions of those officials who now seem to working in tandem with those who denied some associations their voting rights and those who fought for the restoration of those same rights, but who are now fighting strenuously to deny certain associations the same rights that were denied from them for a prolonged period under the past administration.
Matthias advised that they use their energies to alleviate the astronomical debt that they racked up and to positively help in advancing the development of the game within the framework of the FIFA/CONCACAF mandate and the constitution.
“We will continue to forge ahead with our development strategies and not be sidetracked by those who are bent on mischief and deceit,” Matthias concluded.
Commenting on the challenge he had offered to the no-confidence faction, he said that no one came forward to accept the challenge so the nation now has the opportunity to judge who is sincere and who is not.
Matthias had stated that if he is found liable of any wrongdoing by the public at large then he would do the honorable thing and resign.
He also said that should the other side be found guilty of misleading the nation and helping to destabilise football they too should announce their willingness to relinquish their respective posts and apologise to the nation.
