Easter in Guyana is associated with kite flying, a much anticipated activity, especially for Essequibians, both young and old. They would assemble at beaches along the Essequibo Coast in the cool of the afternoon to engage in the activity, which some say symbolizes the resurrection of Christ.
This year, the spectacular Golden Fleece beach was the choice location for many, who not only converged on the beach in their numbers and participated in the traditional kite flying, but also took the opportunity to catch up and socialize with friends from along the Essequibo Coast.
Those Essequibians, who had the appetite for partying, converged on spots on beaches of their choice to hang out and have a grand time, enjoying music and barbecues.
Ann Garraway, a resident of Pomeroon River explained that kite flying in the Pomeroon is an activity that begins weeks ahead leading up to Easter Monday.
Garraway said Easter Day in the Pomeroon, there was a kite flying competition. Garraway stressed that on Easter Monday, the activity was at the Community Center, in the Pomeroon River, where droves of children, accompanied by their parents sought to decorate the skies.
