Father, 4-year-old son killed after speeding car topples into Corentyne canal
(Kaieteur News) – A father and his son perished together on Wednesday in an incident when the vehicle they were traveling in plunged into a canal at Black Bush Polder, Corentyne.
Joseph Mangar, 32, and Johnathan, 4, of Limlair Village, Corentyne, were on their way to collect the man’s daughter from her school when tragedy struck.

The two were believed to have drowned, and the devastating news has left the community of Limlair in shock.
Mangar’s wife, Dellissa Trotman, was too distraught to speak. The child’s aunt who spoke to this publication said Joseph’s mother called them at about 14:11 hrs to inform them that a car resembling the white car he drove was in the trench. The concerned aunt then asked for her nephew.
She said that a little while after, the father was first discovered and removed from the vehicle and ultimately the trench, but persons were initially unaware that the child was also in the vehicle. The child was beyond assistance by the time he was observed, she added.
“When I go, I find my nephew on my sister, and I tek he off her and I tried doing CPR, but I realize I reached too late,” she spoke through tears.
Young Johnathan was a Prep 1 pupil of Nurney Nursery School, Corentyne. His father was a truck driver.

The child’s aunt explained that she could do nothing else but accommodate the details that were presented to the family.
“I heard that his father was driving with speed, and he bounce and topple and the car went up in the air and flipped, and skate and into the trench,” she told this publication.
Preliminary investigations indicated that motorcar #PYY 2317 belonging to Joseph Mangar was heading south along the Lesbeholden Public Road allegedly at a fast rate. Police reports stated that the man lost control of the vehicle, which ended up in a canal, situated on the western side of the said public road.
The vehicle went underwater. Moments after, the duo was removed from the vehicle by citizens on the scene and taken to the Port Mourant Public Hospital, where upon examination by a doctor on duty, they were pronounced dead on arrival.
The bodies were then taken to a funeral parlor for post-mortem examinations.
