Yesterday, Kaieteur Sport highlighted the feats of National Junior Chess champion, Haifeng Su, under ‘Youth in Focus’ and indeed the meritorious returns of this enterprising lad in comparison to his relatively short tenure on the local chess scene was indeed worthy of public adulation.
Haifeng Su
However, a slight misinterpretation during the interview might have skewed the views and we were somewhat unsuccessful in clearly documenting a true picture of Jessica Clementson’s input. We had stated that the young lady is a former student of Mae’s Secondary School and she had subsequently migrated to Barbados.
The article had mentioned Ms Clementson, as an integral part of Haifeng’s success story and she had migrated to Barbados. We also stated that Jessica had organized a tournament at the Mae’s Secondary where Haifeng had his first taste of competitive chess.
In fact, Jessica did not organize that tournament and she is still resident in Guyana but sometimes travel to Barbados to ply her trade in tournaments staged in that Island. Her input in Haifeng’s career occurred at the School of the Nation’s, Parade Street, Kingston, where she and Haifeng had founded the United Chess Club.
Kaieteur Sport regrets the omissions and/or false impression that might have tainted the article and caused embarrassment or discomfort to the principals involved. We are also delighted that despite those inadvertent errors, Haifeng’s status as the local king of junior chess has not been affected.
