Great Britain shooter and Coach Ian Shaw concluded a successful two-week stint with members of the Guyana National Rifle Association which sought to improve the competencies and abilities of the local shooters.
Facilitated in a major way by the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA), Shaw wrapped up activities on Sunday last with a complete rehearsal during a team match using coaches and shooters who are expected to be in Jamaica for this year’s Caribbean Championships.
National Fullbore Captain Mahendra Persaud, who also played an instrumental role in Shaw coming to Guyana, said that the final session on Sunday saw Coaches using the graphs as demonstrated by Shaw.
The new strategy Persaud said was practiced and seemed to work very well. As a means of showing gratitude for Shaw taking time out from his busy schedule to come to Guyana, the GNRA on Sunday evening held an appreciation function at the New Thriving Restaurant where Shaw was presented with a plaque by Persaud to express GNRA’s gratitude for the valuable time spent in Guyana imparting his knowledge.
Shaw, who will shoot for Scotland at this year’s Commonwealth Games to be held in Glasgow, England, July 23 to August 3, 2014 where over 40 nations will compete, expressed thanks to the GNRA, GOA and Persaud for inviting him to come to Guyana noting that the shooters adapted well to the training and he is looking out for great things from the Guyanese team at this year’s Caribbean championships.
National Wind Coach Paul Slowe, who is also Vice President of the GNRA, shared his thoughts on the two week programme.
“I think that the training was very timely. We are all aware of the shooting skills of the trainer, Ian Shaw. He has been a consistent member of the Great Britain Rifle Team, and a member of the Scottish shooting pair at the Commonwealth Games. Ian has been able to reinforce many of the things that make for consistent top quality performance. He has also been able to impart some new and progressive aspects of the sport. We are very grateful for the exposure.”
Slowe, who has also been a prominent member of the dominant Guyana team at the Caribbean level and also captained the West Indies Fullbore Shooting team, posited that it is his hope that the those who participated would be able to put all that was imparted into practice during Guyana’s preparation for the upcoming Caribbean Fullbore Championship in Jamaica.
“Because of the training we should be able to improve our individual performances, and of course, our performance as a team.”
Team training will continue on Sunday at the Timehri Ranges while sessions using the electronic Scat machine will be done at least once per week. (Franklin Wilson)
