According to second Dan Black Belt Judoka and International Coach, William Blackman, the International Judo Association (IJA) only recognizes the now defunct Guyana Judo Association (GJA) as ruling body for Judo in Guyana.
Blackman informed that by virtue of his qualification in 2005 in Ecuador he could Coach any International Judo team adding that he along with Judo Sensei and 4th Dan Black Belt Judoka Andy Moore lodged a complaint in 2007 to the Guyana Olympic Association (GOA) about the manner the GJA was being run by then President Geoff Sankies.
Blackman told Kaieteur Sport that GOA Vice-President Charles Corbin was sent to investigate the matter. According to Blackman, Corbin never addressed the issue and claimed that Personality clashes often caused disputes and recommended a change of the Constitution.
Raoul Archer was elected President in March last year under the Association’s new name the Judo Association of Guyana (JAG), something which Blackman deemed unconstitutional.
Last year October, Blackman, who is also a former national Ruby player, revealed that Archer was informed at an International Conference in Brazil that the International body only recognizes the GJA in Guyana.
According to Blackman, he was among those invited to meet with Archer just after he returned from Brazil. At that meeting Blackman recommended that Archer step down as President and an IMC installed until elections are held.
“Archer and his entire executive should step down since the GJA is now defunct and the IJA does not recognize JAG. So to my mind the way forward is for JAG to change back its constitution, change back its name and hold fresh elections,” Blackman opined.
There are three Judo clubs in Guyana but Blackman says only two of them are functioning clubs-Rising Sun and Kitty Jamaat, both in the city.
Another contentious issue is the withdrawal of monies by the GJA from its account at Citizen’s Bank although the GJA was defunct at that time. The $5million earmarked by the IJA for the development of the sport in Guyana was reportedly not withdrawn for Judo development but to cover the cost of traveling according to Blackman.
