She has already proven her worth as the top scrabble player locally and is intensely preparing to represent Guyana in the World Scrabble Championships slated for Prague in December. However, Abigail McDonald refused to be complacent and once again prevailed in a tournament laden with top seeds when the Guyana Association of Scrabble Players staged the RO Michael Memorial tournament in the pavilion of the Malteenoes Sports Club, Sunday afternoon last.

However it was not smooth sailing for McDonald who had to rebound from a loss to Colin Chichester (68) during the pre-lunch session before amassing 5 points and a positive spread of 451. Leon Belony was once again restricted to the second place slot after amassing 4 points and a positive spread of 398, while Orlando Michael replicated his performance in the Eid Ul Adha Open championship one week ago, sealing off the third place slot with a similar number of games as Belony but a lower positive spread of 181.
McDonald started positively with a win over Ovid Williams and then Ruby Cummings (165) before the Chichester loss. She returned after lunch to defeat Moen Gafoor (56), Orlando Michael (190) and Leon Belony (46). The latter player also conceded his final pre-lunch game to Gafoor (198) but defeated Kamta Ramnarine (87), Julian Skeete (35), Grace Hercules (175) and Chichester (242). Michael rebounded from his losses to McDonald and Ruby Cummings (37) to chalk up wins over Ovid Williams (112), Julian Skeete (94), Chichester (60) and Ramnarine (142).
Meanwhile, despite failing to clinch a podium spot, Wayne Cave came in for special mention after defeating top seed, Moen Gafoor by a spread of 56. He also finished with 4 points but, unluckily, a lower spread (117) than Michael and Belony. Chichester also accrued 4 points but with a still lower spread of 29. He had also secured a win against Gafoor.
