Mohammed, Dottin spur WI Women to win
WICB – BRIDGETOWN, Barbados – Anisa Mohammed followed up destructive batting from Deandra Dottin with a devastating spell to allow West Indies Women to mark her 50th Twenty20 International with a memorable 23-run victory over New Zealand Women in the Women’s T20I Tri-Series on Monday here.
Mohammed grabbed 5-12 from her allotted four overs to earn the Player-of-the-Match award and help the Windies Women dismiss the New Zealanders for 81 in 19 overs in the first match of the tournament under the lights at Kensington Oval.
The 25-year-old off-spinner formalised the victory with six balls remaining, when she had Sian Ruck caught at mid-wicket for a duck, prompting her to leap into the arms of fielder and compatriot Stacy-Ann King in glee. It was the second five-wicket haul of her T20I career.
The result put the home team provisionally on top of the three-team tournament that also includes England, whose first match is against the White Ferns today at the same venue.
Dottin grabbed a rare opportunity of playing in front of her crowd to slam three fours and two sixes in the top score of 52 from 50 balls to help West Indies Women recover from a shaky start, propelling them to 104 for six from their 20 overs.
Alert fielding from King led to the run out of New Zealand captain and opener Suzie Bates for eight in the third over, when the visitors started their chase.
Tight bowling from the Windies Women saw the top order of the New Zealanders’ batting crack under the pressure and they were soon reeling on 31 for four in the 12th over.
But the hosts were put on their heels, when Rachel Priest made 22 and linked up with Amy Satterthwaite to bring the White Ferns back into the contest with a stand of 40 for the wicket.
But Mohammed swung the match decisively, after the New Zealand Women entered the 17th over, requiring 34 from the last 24 deliveries of the match.
She had Priest caught at deep mid-wicket, two deliveries later had Satterthwaite stumped for the top score of 31 and completed the over with the scalp of Frances Mackay bowled essaying a reverse sweep, as the New Zealanders lost their last six wickets for 10 runs in the space of 18 deliveries.
Earlier, Dottin started cautiously before she exploded to rescue West Indies Women from a wobbly 18 for three in the sixth over.
She added 51 for the fourth wicket with Kyshona Knight before taking charge down the stretch to help West Indies collect 33 in the final four overs and add some beef to their total.
