10th CARICOM DAY ‘WHEAT UP’ CYCLING CLASSIC…Greaves wins feature 30-lap contest; RBC take Team Time Trials

On a hot and windy day, the Sea Wall Band Stand was a hive of activity yesterday when the National Milling Company of Guyana (NAMILCO) in association with Roraima Bikers Club held the 10th annual CARICOM Day Cycling Classic.
Pedaling to victory in the feature 30-lap ‘Wheat Up’ Race was Roraima Bikers Club (RBC) member Alonzo Greaves who covered the distance in One Hour 4 Minutes 41 Seconds. Greaves made his move on lap 37, never looking back as he also carted off 6 prime prizes.
Godfrey Pollydore (4 primes) took the second place followed by Paul DeNobrega (2 primes), Orville Hinds (1 prime), Hamza Eastman (2 primes) and Marlon ‘Fishy’ Williams in that order.
Alonzo Greaves raises his hands in triumph as he is unchallenged in winning the feature 30-lap ‘Wheat Up’ race.
Apart from the lucrative cash prizes that were offered to the top six finishers along with trophies, Greaves won for himself one year’s supply of Wheat Up, while there was also ten packs each for the winner of lap 10 (Pollydore), lap 20 (Hinds) and the final lap which went to Greaves.
This year’s event which has been transformed into this format was a resounding success according to the organisers; attracting over 80 riders.
NAMILCO Managing Director Bert Sukhai along with Director of Sport Neil Kumar, RBC Patron George Humphrey and other Executive members of the company and RBC were on hand to take in the action for what was a pulsating day of cycle racing.
Kumar expressed his delight at being a part of the event, complimenting the sponsor and club for a fine job while challenging them to make it even better next year.
Finance Controller of NAMILCO, Fitzroy McLeod, in remarks on behalf of NAMILCO promised that they will pull out all the stops to make it bigger and better in 2014. He thanked the many spectators who came out to support while also thanking the riders for the high level of energy and discipline they displayed.
Also delivering brief remarks was Businessman and Member of the National Sports Commission, Frank DeAbreu who encouraged the young riders to stay in sports while also making their education a priority.
RBC won the Team Time Trials, covering the 4-lap contest in 8 Minutes 00.44 Seconds. Team Coco’s was 2nd in 8 minutes 15.56 Seconds with Flying Star Cycle Club 3rd in 8 Minutes 20.70 Seconds.
