Distance athlete, Samuel Kaitan, for Telsur 10K road race in Suriname tomorrow…Rupununi administrators acknowledge worthwhile support
Eighteen year-old Samuel Kaitan has recently rose to prominence and endorsed the faith placed in his ability, recently defeating Upper Demerara’s distance ace, Nathaniel Giddings in the 10k Road Race in last year’s National Schools Athletic Championships. An athlete of immense potential, Samuel Kaitan has recently received just acknowledgement when the Athletic Club of Region 9 (AC9) recognized his feats and dubbed him the most promising middle distance junior

Chairman of the AC9, Sugreem Singh, said that his charge’s accomplishment is exemplary and as such, his executives felt compelled to acknowledge his feats. He said that Kaitan had recently competed in the Telsur 10K road race in Paramaribo, Suriname where over 350 athletes from several countries participated. He had had placed 6th overall and 3rd in the junior category.
The budding star returns this morning to compete in the 2nd leg of that event in Nickerie, Suriname tomorrow and Mr. Singh is confident that he will emulate, or possibly eclipse, his previous performance.
Attaining the requisite sponsorship had been tedious but the talented athlete managed to influence Ishalton businesswoman, Joyce Lawrence, who has contributed the necessary funding for the trip. Consequently, Mr. Singh has expressed heartfelt gratitude to the businesswoman on behalf of the executives and other members of his organization. He is also grateful to the miners of the Rupununi Miners Association who had selflessly contributed to the venture. “Despite encountering severe economic challenges that restrict their earnings, the mining community has recognized the talent of Kaitan and has unselfishly supported the cause,” said Mr. Singh. He further said that those businessmen have promised to support the development of sports in the region.
Several other individuals also came in for high praise for their role and contribution to the young athlete’s career including the Regional Executive Officer (REO), Regional Development Officer, and the Councilors of the Regional Democratic Council (RDC) whose contribution included donations towards the young athlete’s transportation cost around the Rupununi area and consequently, to Georgetown.
Athletics coach, Leslie Blacks has also been singled for special mention since he had gone beyond the call of duty to ensure that the Rupununi athlete participated in the event. Other notable contributions also came from officials of the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Ministry of Amerindian Affairs, National Sports Commission, Digicel and NBIC (Lethem branch).
“We are indeed grateful for all the assistance received and look forward to similar assistance in the future,” said Mr. Singh.
