Beat Pistons 45-38
It was the telling effect of national player Steve Neils’ nerves down the stretch in tandem with former
national Marvin Hartman, that paved the way for the eventual win by the Kashif and Shanghai Kings to walk away with Trophy Stall League championship, as they staved off a spirited effort from Wismar Pistons, 45-38, in a game that was up for grabs to the last minute of the encounter.
Last Monday’s final match between the Kings and Pistons was one that was close with the Pistons holding the edge in the first period of play as they led 7-4 and 14-11 at half time.
Pistons were in with a chance to win this game in the final stretch but they gave up possession by turning the ball over or misfired on some easy scoring opportunities.
At the same time to stop the clock in the closing stages of this game they had to foul and being in the penalty they chose to do so against the Kings’ best stripe shooters Marvin Hartman and Steve Neils (Jr.).
Hartman first nailed two and then Neils polished off things with four of his five bonus shots from the line towards the end of the game for a 45-38 win.
Neils chalked up 18 points as Omally Sampson, playing in the middle had nine and Hartman seven, while shooter Orin Rose contributed six points.
Post player Quincy Jones and guard Mark Louis both had a team high nine for the Pistons, as captain Nevin Grenville got eight.
At the end of this seeding championship, which was won by the number one seeded club Kings with 11 points from five wins and one loss, their only loss was to second seed and runner-up Amelia’s Ward Jets, who won four games and lost twice, they remained in the top spot.
Third position is occupied by Victory Valley Royals who won four matches and lost one. Of note their game against Retrieve Raiders where they had a chance of winning, was not played as both teams failed to show up on time. Both clubs came away without a point which mattered more to the Royals in this case, for a loss would have given them a crucial one point in the end and create some anxiety among the top four clubs.
Royals eventually held down the third place with nine points since they had beaten both Wismar Pistons and GTS Bulls.
The Pistons and Bulls also finished with nine points and were placed fourth and fifth respectively.
The Retrieve Raiders prevented the carpet position with six points from one win and five defeats as their only win was against Block 22 Flames who finished last in this seven team championship with five points from five losses and a walkover defeat.
