Guyanese players, participating in the Junior Davis/Fed Cup Tennis tournament for the first time,
started on a losing note with both male and female teams dropping their inaugural games 3-0 to El Salvador when activities got underway in Santo Domingo Monday morning last.
Reports out of the Spanish country state that despite the loss, 2011 ITF Girls U-14 champion Aretta Dey, performed credibly against the more seasoned Paola Carprio of El Salvador in their Under 16 encounter.
The first set was closely contested with Dey eventually conceding a close 6-4 loss. Carprio then secured the second set by a 6-2 margin in a fiercely contested game that lasted all of 90 minutes. Nicola Ramdyhan proved no match for her opponent and succumbed in straight sets. The pair then returned in the doubles tie but lost that as well.
In the male encounter, Daniel Lopes battled for more than one hour against Galileo Cabrales of El Salvador but lost steam and finally succumbed 6-2, 6-0. His compatriot Gavin Lewis also lost his singles encounter in straight sets before Lopes and Khalif Gobin teamed up in a losing effort in their doubles match.
The Guyanese players will continue their quest against Guatemala in the Boy’s category whilst the Girl’s team will take on Honduras later this week. The top two teams in each group will advance after the round robin stage while the remaining teams will participate in a play-off amongst themselves. Most of the other Caribbean teams struggled with only Trinidad registering a victory against Haiti.
