Windwards qualify for Caribbean T20 semis at Guyana’s expense

The Windward Islands fought and qualified for the semifinals of the Caribbean T20 cricket tournament in Barbados yesterday by 5 wickets on the Duckworth Lewis system.
In a game affected by rain and having to employ the Duckworth Lewis system, the Windwards got past the Guyanese by reaching the required total after ensuring their superior run rate was intact to Guyana’s.
Batting first, Guyana after a good start faltered and ended on 140 for 8 off their 20 overs despite a rain delay. Skipper Christopher Barnwell top scored with 32 in the middle, while earlier in the innings Sewnarine Chattergoon 27 and Trevon Griffith 17 made a good start. Darren Sammy 3-11 and Delorn Johnson a bit expensive with 3-40 took wickets at regular intervals to restrict Guyana.
Chasing a revised target, the Windwards reached the required 94 runs to ensure their qualification before winning the match, reaching 119 for 5 to win the match. Johnson Charles made 65 at the top for the Windwards to lead their fight. Devon Smith supported with 25 not out. Devendra Bishoo with 3 -15 and Royston Crandon 2 wickets were the bowlers on target for Guyana.
Jamaica play the Netherlands and CCC face Barbados to round off the preliminary phase today.
