Dear Editor,
A few hours after GECOM’s declaration, the PPP’s Campaign Manager lamented that it was their supporters’ apathy and no-show that caused their loss of a majority. Not only did he blame them, he then threatened that they were very close to losing free elections ever again in Guyana.
What nonsense! Have they not yet realised what has happened? It was this very arrogance, and total disregard for the people of Guyana, that alienated their own voters.
Wake up, Robert, did you recall the massive ‘cross-over’ votes you preached about on Channel 65 since 1997? No, you didn’t. It was them that your campaign cussed out. The AFC mopped up the rest. The PPP believes they own Indians in Guyana. They take them for granted and prey upon their fears. Well, they will not accept that abuse any longer…or the corruption and lawlessness.
We should appeal to President-elect Ramotar to learn from the now historic mistakes of his predecessor who has disappointed us all. Work with the Opposition, respect & value the entire electorate. Explore ways of sharing responsibility. Do not view it selfishly as sharing your power. The people have spoken whose power it is you have been trusted with. You have their goodwill. Use it before it is gone.
On the other hand, we must call on the Opposition to work with the new Government. They must be firm but reasonable and practical, and not try to disrupt the administration. Accountability is Job 1.
The PPP should learn now what democracy really is, having repeated ad nauseum that they restored it. The landscape has changed. It is not that the Opposition needs Indian votes to win. It is the PPP that needs African votes to remain. Khemraj Ramlagan
