Dear Editor,
Please allow me space to share my thoughts on Local Government elections. As far as I am concerned, this has been a big waste of time. Billions of taxpayers’ money and energy lost in daily confrontations among councillors. For the past 30 years, every NDC and municipality have failed the citizenry of this country badly. Citizenry complains and dissatisfactions are gigantic and burdensome to the peace of mind law-abiding Guyanese.
Editor, as a country struggling to match true development in comparison to the Caribbean and the rest of the world, we should not continue with this system which breeds incompetent community management. Every community in this country is in chaos, worse than the wild west. From unsightly garbage disposal, to illegal disregard for building codes and approvals. The dumping of building materials and mud on road shoulders for months are notably widespread. One of the biggest observations to mention is the misconception of the parapet in front our yards. Too many people believe it is their personal property and sought to fence or placed huge boulders which is causing the narrowing of the road passageway. This has been tolerated for too long. All these acts of lawlessness happen under the nose of all the NDCs. These continuous problems and dysfunction happen as a result of poor management structure derived from our local government system. A careful examination of suitably qualified/experience of persons managing of our NDCs are woefully absent.
Editor, the NDC system has not worked and from all indication it will never work. It needs to be abolished and replace with a fulltime government funded management structure with suitably qualified individuals who can deliver satisfactory management to our communities.
Yours sincerely,
Collin Woolford
