Apr 21, 2026 Letters
Dear Editor,
I refer to a letter dated April 18, 2026 in your esteemed newspaper written by Elder Hamilton Green entitled, “Demand a bigger slice of the cake”.
While I mostly agree with the Elder, I beg to differ on two points.
He wrote “I write to honour those who fought for freedom; Cuffy, Akrabe, Enmore Martyrs, Hubert Nathaniel Critchlow, Cheddi Jagan and Forbes Burnham”.
Forbes Burnham, while he was the beneficiary of political Independence from the UK, he recolonised the country to the USA (economic dependence). As far as I read in CIA declassified documents, Mr. Burnham was on the payroll of the U.S. He was a total sell out in his quest for power. He may have also put us in this current border controversy dilemma when he agreed to reopen a matter that was already settled in 1899.
As far as I read, H.N. Critchlow lost his credibility as a freedom fighter when he opposed Universal Adult Suffrage as he was not in favour of East Indians being allowed to vote.
Perhaps, historians like Vishnu Bisram and Freddie Kissoon can shed some light on this side of Mr. Critchlow?
Regards,
Sham Rahman Mohammed
