– Koulen, Sankar shine for GYO
Left-arm spinner Damien Vantull grabbed eight wickets in the match and Godfrey Thakurdin scored a solid 64
to spearhead host UG to an innings victory against Vikings over the weekend in their Georgetown Cricket Association (GCA) two-day second division cricket competition.
Stephon Josiah grabbed 4-25 and got support from Ronnie Ramsingh (3-30) and Vantull (2-9) as Vikings were bundled out for 71 in their first innings as only Frederick Pestano and Shane Bacchus with 13 each reached double figures.
Thakurdin then led the way with his half-century, while Melroy Stephon (38), Clevon Hyman (37), Dwayne Dodson (34), Kenroy Joseph (21) and Darrell Douglas (20) all chipped in with the bat as the students declared at 232-8.
Raymond Sumir (2-19), Pestano (2-29) and Yusuf Ali (2-25) bowled well for Vikings who were dismissed for 87 in their second innings with Pestano top-scoring with 23.
Berbician Vantull, a former first division player from Corentyne team Rose Hall Town and City side Malteenoes, befuddled the batsmen with 6-28 while Denis Haywood took 2-29 to spur the Turkeyen institution to an emphatic innings and 74-run victory.
At GYO, Skipper Derek Koulen struck 18 fours and a six in 96, while teenage leg-spinner Shivanauth Sankar 13 wickets in the contest to help the host to first innings points against MYO.
M. Wazib Ali (61) and Asraf Ali (45) helped MYO to 268 as Sankar took 6-118 and got back up from Garfield DeRoach (2-52).
The 41-year-old Koulen got support from Shivnand Roopnarine (83) as S. Ishmeal had 6-60 for MYO who fell for 200 in their second innings as the game ended in a draw.
Asraf Ali led the way with 64 as Sankar spun webs around the batsmen to finish with 7-51, while Roopnarine captured 3-29. (Sean Devers)
