-‘Brother’ goes for gold, Horatio seeks revenge
Dennis Horatio and Cleveland Thomas are unhappy that Nathaniel ‘Brother’ Giddings has made them underdogs today. The only way for them to prove otherwise is reinforcing the fact that they may be superior to the unorthodox ‘barefoot’ junior athlete.
The two outcomes of today’s Courts 10km Road Race Classic, which starts at 6:00am, are easy to deduce; its one of two things; ‘Brother’ will either prove that his win over Horatio and Thomas three weeks ago was no fluke or Horatio and Thomas will reinforce their superiority.
Either which way, today makes for interesting rivalries with revenge at the back of the minds of both Horatio and Thomas. Giddings will continue running the way he knows best, which is to go out a mile, leaving his rivals to prove that they are at his fitness level.
Enter Cleveland Forde, one of the Caribbean’s best distance runners and the only one to overhaul Giddings emphatic lead three weeks ago. Today’s race, with Horatio and Thomas likely to go out with Giddings and Forde, threatens to be an extremely fast race.
“I allowed him to get away too far. He went away like 800m but near the end of the race that was down to about 300m, which meant that I was closing on him. I will not be making those mistakes at the Courts race tomorrow. You watch,” Horatio said yesterday.
Giddings defeated Horatio over just a minute in their last encounter. ‘Brother’ had 34:36 to place second behind Forde who won in 34:24 three weeks ago. Horatio had 35:30 for third overall and Thomas came in with 35:48. The battle will be among them today.
The female race is a clearer scenario with Alika Morgan likely to win easily. Her closest rivals in this version are expected to be the Guyana Defence Force’s Ashanti Scott and Police Progressive Youth Club’s Eva Harry. Morgan should win the Courts female title.
The winners in the male and female senior categories will run away with a whopping $100,000. The second place finisher will get $80,000; third place $60,000; fourth place $40,000 while fifth place go home with $20,000 in both the senior categories.
Trophies will accompany all prizes. The prizes in the Masters category are $60,000, $40,000 and $20,000 respectively for first, second and third. The Masters’ category is for competitors who are Over-40 years old. There will also be a junior category for U-20 athletes.
The race gets underway at 6am with the Guyana Police Force controlling the race route while the First Aid will be on hand to ensure a smooth and incident-free race. Banks DIH has also come on board with its Tropical Mist Water and Powerade brands.
There will also be face painting exercises, inflated castles for children and tons of games inside the store. There will be a cake-sticking ceremony with Stereo Sonics bringing the entertainment vibes throughout the various attractions that are planned.
Competitors, patrons and the public will have an opportunity to bring out the entire family to the event that will be organised in a Fun Day setting. There are offers as customers can receive up to 18 percent off the selected items in the store.
Kaieteur Sport was informed that 18 customers will be winning $18,000 during this month, so today represents a significant moment for those customers to cash in on not only the race, but on the various offers of the store during its anniversary. (Edison Jefford)
