Several up-and-coming racquet wielders impressed on Sunday when the Guyana Table Tennis Association (GTTA) held a playoffs at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall to select a Pre-Cadet’s Team to compete in the Dominican Republic, July month end.
The Pre-Cadet Championships cover players under the ages of 10 and 13 with categories for both boys and girls. Guyana has had successes in this competition over the last two years with current Junior Sportswoman of the Year, Chelsea Edghill ruling the roost.
Elishaba Johnson, Kyle Edghill and Rajiv Muneshwar won a boys’ team gold medal at this level as well, leaving an impressive track record for a fairly new group of Pre-Cadet Players, who will be hoping to hear their names when the national team is announced.
The Pre-Cadet category is part of the new International Table Tennis Federation global initiative aimed at exposing players internationally at a younger age, which is geared toward bridging what was deemed an existing gap among the players internationally.
A host of new players showed interest in the categories; Muneshwar, Khalid Gobin, Shemar Britton, Jordan Conway, Miguel Wong were among the new players that emerged in the 13 years and under with Edgehill and Johnson the more established campaigners.
Priyanna Ramdhani, Abigale Martin and Amoscia Booker were among the female players under-10 years, who emerged on Sunday while Priscilla Greaves, Jamaali Homer, Kristee Lopes and Anna Joao were among the under-13 established players.
The GTTA President, Commissioner of Police, Henry Greene, was reportedly on hand to witness some of the playoff matches Sunday.
The GTTA Selections Committee will meet to confirm the final composition of the respective teams for the Dominican Republic.
