Robin Persaud will definitely be in the saddles and aiming to successfully retain the top spot when the 12th annual Castrol sponsored Father’s Day 50 mile cycle road race takes place on the West Demerara on Sunday.
Also a father, Persaud will be challenged by a number of other father’s in a race that is expected to be a keen contest with the possibility of last year’s time of 1 hour 53 minutes 54.50 seconds being lowered. There seems to be new energy and zeal among the riders which will make the sport much more exiting and competitive.
Alonzo Greaves who won last Saturday’s P&P Insurance Brokers feature race in the National Park will be one of the main contenders to Persaud’s title as will Warren ‘Forty’ Mc Kay, Junior Niles, Lear Nunes, Turhan Harris, Walter Grant-Stuart, Darren Allen, Raymond Newton and Junior Niles among others.
Paul De Nobrega will also be challenged to retain the junior title by Linden’s Michael Anthony who won the juvenile race last Saturday also at the National Park. Davendra Bishoo and Rawle Leal are other contenders in this category.
Virgil Jones (veteran), Clyde Butts (upright) and Monty Parris (veteran over-60) are the other category winners from last year.
Sunday’s event is expected to pedal off from the Wales Police Station, West Bank Demerara at 09:00hrs proceed to Bushy Park on the East Bank of Essequibo before returning to the Demerara Harbour Bridge for the finish.
Veteran, upright and female riders will turn back at the Uitvlugt Community Centre to end at the Harbor Bridge where Castrol Brand Manager Leonard Khan will be on hand to distribute prizes and trophies to the first six (6) overall finishers, first three juniors, veterans and upright riders to cross the finish line.
The first two females as well as the first over-60 veteran will also be rewarded while eight (8) sprint prizes will be up for the taking during the course of the race. (Franklin Wilson)
