Guyana’s Junior and Cadet Teams competing at Caribbean Table Tennis (TT) Championships in San German, Puerto Rico, secured bronze medals in the Girls’ 15-years-and-under and Boys’ 18-years-and-under team events on Friday.
In the Girls’ 15-years-and-under competition, the Guyanese trio comprising Junior Sportswoman and former Caribbean Cadet Champion, Chelsea Edghill, Olivia Weekes and Christie Lopes won a bronze medal in the round robin team finals.
Girls 15-years-and-under Round Robin Finals Results:
Guyana vs Dominican Republic: Edghill defeated Karla Brito 3-0; Olivia Weekes lost to Kircia Diaz 0-3 and Lopes lost to Ancalis Pichardo.
Guyana vs Puerto Rico: Edghill lost to Melanie Diaz 2-3; Kristie Lopes lost to Adrianna Diaz and Olivia Weekes lost to Daniely Rios.
The Boys 18-years-and-under team of Nigel Bryan, Brad Belle, Denzil Hopkinson and Denzel Duff defeated Jamaica 3-0 with Bryan, Belle and Duff picking up the wins. They lost 0-3 to the powerhouses, Puerto Rico and Dominican Republic to secure bronze.
Guyana vs Puerto Rico: Belle lost to Danile Gonzalez 0-3; Bryan lost to Richard Pietri 1-3 and Hopkinson lost 2-3 to Brandon Echevarria.
Guyana vs Dominican Republic: Brad defeated Geury Peguero 3-0; Bryan lost to Juan Villa Jnr. 1-3 and Hopkinson lost 2-3 to Miguel Jimenez.
The team stormed back to defeat Jamaica 3-0. On their way to securing the third place, Guyana defeated Barbados 3-0; Aruba 3-0 and St. Marten 3-0 for emphatic wins.
Based on reports reaching Kaieteur Sport yesterday, the Boys’ 15-years-and-under team, which c comprised 2010 Caribbean Cadet Silver medalist, Jamaal Duff, Joseph Johnson, Sunil Logan and Stephan Corlette did not have a good outing.
The team lost to Puerto Rico 3-0, Trinidad and Tobago 3-0, Dominican Republic 3-0 and Jamaica 3-1. Their only win (3-2) came against Barbados.
The Girls’18-years-and-under team with debutants, Jewel Todd, Anna Joao along with the 2010 team title medalist, US-based, Saskeia Chung narrowly missed out on a bronze medal after what was described by the team’s management as an “unexpected” lost to St. Marten.
