Berbice High School (BHS) played unbeaten, scoring two victories and two draws, to come out victors when the second edition of the annual Trinidad and Guyana (T&G) Sports Club and Outreach Programme Inter Secondary school first form football tournament for schools in the New Amsterdam Canje area was played last Saturday at the All Saints Scott Church ground, Esplanade and Vryheid Road New Amsterdam.
Five of the seven schools invited for the tournament participated in the day’s activity. Namely Berbice High School (BHS), Berbice Educational Institute (BEI), Vryman’s Erven Secondary School (VESS), Tutorial Academy Secondary (TASS) and School of The Nations (SOTN). Canje Secondary School (CSS) and New Amsterdam Multilateral Secondary (NAMS) did not show up or either walked with over age players and were not allowed to play. The competition was played using the small goal format on a round robin basis with all of the schools required to play each other in the 20 minutes a game encounter.
Results of matches played were; BHS and SOTN open the day’s proceedings and played to 0-0 draw. VESS and TASS then played to a 1-1 stalemate. BHS then returned to defeat BEI 2-0 with Sanjeef Sookraj and Derick Taylor being on target.
VESS then needled SOTN 1-0, the next encounter saw BEI and TASS playing out a 0-0 draw. In a top of the table clash, BHS and VESS went hard at each other but were unable to break the stalemate with the game ending 0-0. The TASS and SOTN match then ended 0-0. The BEI and VESS game also ended 0-0.
BHS then ensured that their unbeatable record stayed intact with a 1-0 victory over TASS with captain Derick Taylor netting from the penalty spot. In the final game in the day’s encounter BEI got the better of SOTN 1-0.
In the presentation which followed, BHS received the Daniel’s Challenge Shield and a football for their exploits. Second placed went to VESS with one win and three draws and they received a football. BEI with one win, two draws and a loss was awarded third place and they also received a football. A number of individual awards were also presented to outstanding performers and they went to Derick Taylor of BHS, the Best Striker and he received a football, one medal, one pair football socks and one pair shin pads.
The Best Defender on show was Akeem Tucker also of BHS and he also received a football, one medal, one pair football socks and one pair shin pads. Ray Hinds of VESS received the accolades for best midfielder and he also was presented with a football, one medal, one pair football socks and one pair shin pads.
The Best goal during the day was netted by Sanjeev Sookraj of BHS and he received one medal, one pair football socks and one pair shin pads.
Dale Lambert of SOTN got his rewards for being the most promising player on show and was also presented with one medal, one pair football socks and one pair shin pads.
Two other players Devon George and Jonathan Lalbachan both of SOTN were singled out as promising players and were presented with one pair football socks and one pair shin pads each.
Speaking at the presentation ceremony, sponsor Isaac Daniel, a resident of Trinidad and a regular visitor of Guyana stated that he started to organize activities in Guyana some eight year ago. He loves to visit Guyana and would come here regularly to holiday and would mostly stay in the East Canje area. During his early visits he noticed that there was a lack of organized recreational activities and he decided to do something.
He started buy organizing village games, then nursery school activities. This is his second year sponsoring the Inter school Under-13 first form Football Extravaganza. He pledged to continue doing the activity on a bigger scale in the foreseeable future. Daniel stated that most of the prizes that are presented are from friend and associates in Trinidad.
The competition was coordinated by former national Player Neil ‘Grizzly’ Humphrey, Nigel ‘Bus it’ Felix and Kenrick Bowry.
