– Hoping that the junior development programme continues
By Rawle Welch
Outgoing President of the Guyana Netball Association (GNA) Dr. Maxine Parris-Aaron speaking with Kaieteur Sport two days before the entity’s Annual General Meeting (AGM) to elect office bearers said that she is not leaving with any animosity, but rather her choice not to seek re-election is purely for personal reasons.
The GNA is set to hold its AGM tomorrow in the Ministry of Culture, Youth and Sport Boardroom on Main Street and starting time is 14:30 hrs.
So far, according to an inside source, only one candidate has expressed interest in vying for the top post and that is Attorney-at-Law Kim Kyte-John, while the race for the other positions is anticipated to be closely contested.
Dr. Parris-Aaron, who took over the presidency in 2000, disclosed that she is satisfied with the progress the sport has enjoyed over the past few years and expressed thanks to all the members of the executive who served during the period, especially those in the last four. “I would like to express my sincere gratitude to all those who supported me during my Presidency,” Dr. Parris-Aaron stated.
According to the President, her main reasons for not seeking re-election is the fact that over the past ten years, because the sport did not get adequate corporate and governmental support, she was forced to utilise much of her personal funds to assist in many critical areas, while the neglect of other private interest has taken its toll as well.
She, however, indicated that even though she is not interested in an executive post, she will not be too far away from the sport and extended an invitation to members of the incoming administration to seek her expertise should they need it.
“I’m hoping that the work that was started during my tenure with junior development will continue since the players are at a stage now where I feel in a couple of years they could compete with distinction in the Caribbean,” Dr. Parris-Aaron said.
She revealed that during her term in office she was able to garner a lot of support from her regional counterparts and even moved from being elected as a 2nd Vice President on the Caribbean Netball Association to the current post of 1st Vice-President and is even being encouraged to run for the office of President.
She added that Guyana needs to stay in competition for the game and the players to develop and the new administration must strive to continue on the current path.
Dr. Parris-Aaron noted that more training for umpires must also take place, a feature she viewed as imperative for the further development of the game.
“Players usually put a lot of effort into their preparations and if were going to have a situation where they feel hard done-by certain decisions then that could create unhelpful conditions and damage the image of the sport,” Dr. Parris-Aaron mentioned.
She, however, disclosed that quite recently there has been a surge in interest among persons to participate in that area and she is hoping that the newly-elected office bearers ensure and encourage those individuals to get involved and test them for their competence.
She also said that over the years she received support from a few individuals and organisations and she will implore that they extend the same level of or even more support to the new Body.
Dr. Parris-Aaron said that she hopes that sometime in the future the Ministry of Sport will recognise that Netball is a significant sport within the Caribbean and begin to offer it the right kind of respect and support that was lacking during her term in office.
She reckoned that with the right kind of financial infusion and other related support, the sport could become a vessel on which our young women could receive positive influence.
Meanwhile, six clubs will participate in the AGM and they are All Stars, Doves, Eagles, Emanie, Fearless Flyers and Rim Rockerz.
Dr. Parris-Aaron did indicate that the GDF who’re a member of the GNA has expressed an interest in attending the AGM, but would have to become financial before being allowed to participate.
All clubs are being advised to settle their financial status on or before tomorrow or they would not be allowed to vote.
The Returning Officer is Godfrey Munroe.
