Public Relations Officer (PRO) of the Berbice Cricket Board and 2009 National Sports Personality Hilbert Foster has made a passionate plea to cricket administrators in Guyana to stop the infighting that is gradually destroying the image of the game.
The long serving cricket administrator who is also the Secretary/CEO of Guyana’s leading Youth & Sports organisation – Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club – made the appeal at the Berbice Cricket Board Annual Appreciation Luncheon that was held last weekend.
Describing the situation as ‘Profound Madness’ a visibly upset Foster challenged all to always put cricket and cricketers first and to stop looking after personal ambitions and power status.
The 42-year-old Foster who has resisted numerous requests from the cricketing public to run for office at the national level said that he has dedicated more than half of his life to cricket administration but for the first time he was feeling disappointed about it.
Cricket in Guyana he noted needs committed, visionary and disciplined leadership and leaders who would be role models and mentors to all cricketers.
Speaking to an audience that included Guyana Cricket Board President Chetram Singh, Demerara Cricket Board President Bissoondyal Singh, Georgetown Cricket Association President Roger Harper, Chairman of National Selectors Claude Raphael and other leading cricket administrators, the vocal and outspoken Rose Hall Town Youth & Sports Club CEO stated that he was tired of hearing about Court Injunctions, attack on personal character and an unending quest for power.
He called on others to follow the example set by the Berbice Board where unbelievable success and progress has been achieved by following a simple formula which is hard work, unity, team work, vision and forward planning, and a strong desire to make a positive difference.
Berbice cricket he stated has no infighting, no personal grudges and everyone is on the same level with no leader seeking glory over the other.
Cricket and cricketers are always placed first and every month the Board strives to come up with new ideas to further develop the game. Foster disclosed that since his involvement in Berbice cricket over the past three years, there was never one incident of infighting. He challenged everyone involved to work together for the development of the game.
The administration of Guyana’s cricket has been thrown into turmoil with well publicized internal fighting and allegations of corruption and power grabbing and this Foster warned would result in everyone being painted with a broad brush and will result in sponsors staying far away from the game.
