Kaieteur Sports – Guyanese Olympian and boxing champion Keevin Allicock has warmly welcomed the Government of Guyana’s proposed $6 billion allocation to the sports sector, describing it as a transformative investment in athletes, youth development and the nation’s sporting future.
The significant allocation, announced during the reading of the 2026 National Budget last Monday, is geared towards improving facilities, empowering local talent and advancing national development through sport.
Allicock, who represented Guyana in boxing at the 2020 Summer Olympic Games in Tokyo in the men’s featherweight event, expressed deep appreciation for the government’s commitment. Despite his Olympic debut ended without medaling, Allicock’s career includes multiple gold medals and a silver medal from Caribbean Championships between 2016 and 2017, along with consistent participation in local and international competitions.
“It is with profound gratitude that I acknowledge the allocation of $6 billion to the Ministry of Sport in the 2026 national budget,” Allicock said. “This is more than funds. It is a vote of confidence in our athletes, our youth, and the future of sports in Guyana.”
Drawing from his personal journey in boxing, the Olympian underscored the importance of sustained support for athletes striving for excellence.
“As a boxing champion, I understand the dedication, the discipline, and the sacrifice it takes to rise to the top,” he noted. “This support ensures that our athletes will have the resources, guidance, and opportunity to train, compete, and excel; not just locally, but on the world stage.”
Allicock expressed confidence that continued investment in sports will yield long-term dividends for the country, both in performance and inspiration.
“With continuing investment and belief in our talent, I am confident Guyana will produce more champions, inspire our youth, and shine brightly on the global sporting stage,” he said.
Speaking on behalf of athletes nationwide, Allicock extended heartfelt thanks to the government and key stakeholders for their leadership and vision.
“On behalf of all athletes, I extend my heartfelt thanks for this commitment to sports—a commitment to the dreams and ambitions of every Guyanese,” he stated. “I would also like to say a special thank you to His Excellency for the great leadership he has shown over the past five years.”
He also commended Minister of Culture, Youth and Sports, the Honourable Charles Ramson Jr., for advancing sports development across the country.
“I can see the transformation in sports through the building of community grounds, the enhancement of recreational spaces, and so much more,” Allicock said.
Additionally, praise was directed to Minister within the Ministry, Stephen Jacob, for his hands-on approach and vision for athlete development.
“He is on the ground, working expeditiously, and I can tell that this is the time when all athletes will benefit even more,” Allicock remarked. “With the collaboration, vision and leadership of Minister Ramson and Minister Jacob, I am truly excited for the next five years of sports development in Guyana.”
The $6 billion allocation signals one of the most substantial investments in sports in Guyana’s history, and, as Allicock’s remarks reflect, it has been met with optimism and renewed confidence among the nation’s athletes.
