(Kaieteur News) – Twenty-three-year-old Jomel Kenny was on Friday remanded to prison in connection with the fatal multi-vehicle accident on the Bharrat Jagdeo River Bridge that claimed the life of a taxi driver.
Kenny, of Lot 48 Anna Catherina, West Coast Demerara, appeared before Magistrate Dylon Bess at the Diamond Magistrates’ Court. He was charged with driving without a licence, breach of insurance and faulty packing of a load.
On January 29, Kenny was driving a motor lorry that suffered a mechanical failure while ascending the bridge and rolled into oncoming traffic. The incident resulted in a six-vehicle collision and the death of 25-year-old taxi driver Scott Dorwart of Grove, East Bank Demerara.
Kenny pleaded not guilty to the charges and was remanded to prison.
The owner of the truck,55-year-old Antonio Johnson of Lot 6C Anna Catherina was also charged. He pleaded not guilty to breaching insurance and permitting an unlicensed driver to operate the vehicle. He was placed on $50,000 bail.
According to reports, the accident occurred around 9:30 hrs along the bridge. The incident involved motor lorry GAC 296, which was travelling on the western side of the bridge en route to Region Three. The truck, which was transporting a load of cement, reportedly experienced a mechanical failure while ascending the bridge and began rolling backwards at high speed. The out-of-control vehicle slammed into five other vehicles before eventually coming to a halt.
