Guyanese basketball lovers that have been craving for keen action will get their desires met when the Wildfire Entertainment stages its 8th Annual All Stars Weekend from Friday 12 to Sunday 14 November at the Cliff Anderson Sports Hall (CASH), Homestretch Avenue, Georgetown. Guyanese top basketball players will oppose their counterparts from the USA, the AND 1 Legends, in an exciting weekend of top class basketball that features for the first time the USA team.
Yesterday morning the overseas players arrived in Georgetown and shortly afterwards visited the offices of the Guyana Telephone and Telegraph Company (GT&T), one of the main sponsors of the championships for a media brief. There, Director of Marketing, Wystan Robertson presented a sponsorship package on behalf of his organization, to offset the expenses of the organizers.
The GT&T executive bade the overseas contingent welcome and noted that basketball has been rising in popularity. He said that his company recognized that the sport is populated by the less affluent and the executive of GT&T took this into consideration when it acquiesced to render support. Mr. Robertson further highlighted the corporate nature of his organization when he spoke of a refurbished basketball court handed over to the residents of Sophia by his company recently. He labeled this gesture as indicative of the strong commitment of GT&T to youth development. “GT&T has a long history in the involvement of sport and the development of young people since we recognize that through sports these young people could benefit and lead more productive lives,” said Mr. Robertson.
Marketing Director of AND 1, Linda Hill said that while the overseas players are here to play a great game of basketball and provide entertainment their primary aim is to inspire young people while enforcing the message that sports participation is preferable over the use of illicit drugs. She described her players as a team of top dunkers and shooters with unbelievable talent.
Meanwhile, the players interacted with the media and sponsors moments after the culmination of the press conference and were all humorous and witty as they encouraged the Guyanese public to come out and be a part of the fun and frolic. The foreign players have all opted for sobriquets and among some of them that will be on show are Africa, Bone Collector, Air up There, Professor, High Rizer, Showstoppa and Fifty. The squad has also traveled with an Emcee, Rell, who will add to the ambiance of the programme.
The local players would be drawn from Steve Neils, Tyronne Hamid, Nkossi Gurrick, Ryan Gullen, Vivian Alder, Travis Foster, Kerwin Blades, Stephon Henry, Ryan Stephney and Roysten Siland.
When the whistle sounds on Friday night for the first game, it will be a Junior All Stars team from Linden that will oppose their Georgetown counterparts followed by the senior players from Georgetown and Linden matching skills. Thereafter, activities are expected to reach fever pitch when the AND 1 players and their local counterparts attempt to eclipse the skills of each other.
There will also be novelty events where members of the audience may be able to win lucrative prizes, compliments of GT&T. One of the prizes includes a Blueberry cell phone.
