Four debutants named in Guyana 14-man squad
By Sean Devers
The opening pair badly let Guyana down in the Champions League T20 tournament in South Africa and with Guyana about to begin their campaign for their first Regional 50-over cricket title since 2005, the national selectors appears to have finally decided that enough is enough.
It is understood that both Sewnarine Chattergoon and Travis Dowlin, two players with Test experience have been sacked as selectors bank on new blood to try and lift Guyana’s cricket out of the doldrums it has found itself in over the last few years.
Although the cupboard of competent young wicket keepers in Guyana seems bare, Derwin Christian has also been given the boot as the selectors’ patience seem to have run thin after repeated failures with the bat due to impetuous shot selection. While Anthony Bramble’s glove work is a bit untidy he has been given a first-time senior team call-up more on the strength of his batting than anything else.
A usually reliable source informed that the team, which was picked yesterday, includes Leon Johnson, the former West Indies under-19 Skipper who played at the ODI level before losing form, confidence and his place in the Guyana team. His recent batting in the inter-county tournament has convinced the selectors that, still a very young player, he is ready for a new phase in his career.
The versatile Chris Barnwell could be asked to open with the talented former West Indies under-19 opener Richard Ramdeen. It is understood that Assad Fudadin, a middle order batsman, could also be asked to open with Ramdeen in Jamaica.
The 20-year-old Jonathon Foo who showed that he still has a lot of work to do, especially to score freely off the short balls, has been retained from the team which endured four consecutive defeats in South Africa, presumably, mainly due to his natural talent and age.
Steven Jacobs, whose off-spin bowling has improved, is also in the One-Day team while the selectors have included West Indies under-19 pacer Keon Joseph in the 14-man squad scheduled to depart Guyana next Wednesday.
The selectors have stopped just short of making sweeping changes and have surprisingly retained fast bowler Esuan Crandon although left-arm pacer 19-year-old Andre Stoll bowled impressively in both inter county matches he played for Demerara. He is also a useful lower order batsman.
Crandon’s brother Royston, strangely used by Berbice and Guyana as a front line off-spinner when he is a batsman who could bowl a bit, has also been retained but with his batting failing to produce in recent times, his place in the starting X1 could be in jeopardy because of Jacob’s ability to bowl decent off-spin.
Narsingh Deonarine has also been retained and his under-utilized off-spin bowling could have aided his selection after repeated failures with the bat in his last few matches for Guyana.
Davendra Bishoo is the lone specialist spinner selected and along with Joseph could be asked to perform the role as wicket-takers on Jamaican pitches that should offer much more bounce than the ones here.
Even without the experience of Chattergoon and Dowlin, the dependable Shivnarine Chanderpaul, the classy Ramnaresh Sarwan and the gifted but inconsistent Deonarine gives the Guyana batting enough fire-power to build good totals in Jamaica.
Carl Moore has been retained as Manager while former Guyana batsman and Level I coach Ravendra Seeram is still the coach.
Joseph, Ramdeen, Bramble and Foo have never played for Guyana at the
regional one-day level 19 team while Jacobs played 2 of his 4 Regional one-day matches for the West Indies under-19 side.
Joseph played a solitary First-Class game for Guyana in Grenada this year while Ramdeen’s only senior team match was in the final T20 game in South Africa. Foo has played 8 T20 games for Guyana.
Up to press time, it was not clear if the Video Analyst, trainer and physiotherapist who traveled to South Africa will accompany the team to Jamaica for the 8-team competition which commences next week Thursday.
Guyana face the HPC team in their opening match on Friday before facing Barbados on Oct 17 and the Leeward Islands on Oct 19. Chanderpaul and Sarwan are expected to play major roles if Guyana are to reach the October 24 final at Sabina Park.
The 14-man squad read. Ramnaresh Sarwan (Captain), Chris Barnwell, Davendra Bishoo, Anthony Bramble, Royston Crandon, Esuan Crandon, Narsingh Deonarine, Jonathon Foo, Assad Fudadin, Steven Jacobs, Leon Johnson, Keon Joseph, Richard Ramdeem, Shivnarine Chanderpaul
