– competition starts Sunday
The Guyana Tapeball Association (GTA) inaugural Super Sixes, seven-a-side tapeball cricket competition was officially launched yesterday at the Everest pavilion.
The competition, which is scheduled to commence on Sunday with a large number of matches across the country, will conclude on October 10 under lights at the Everest Cricket Club ground, Carifesta Avenue.
Director of Sports, Neil Kumar has urged players to unite. Kumar, in his feature address, congratulated the GTA for the initiative, while expressing gratitude to various sponsors.
He has also called on the players to unite as sport continues to be a team game.
He reflected on the Guyana T20 team’s participation in the Airtel Champions League Tournament in South Africa as an inspiration to sport enthusiasts in Guyana.
Kumar also stated that the government is always committed to the development of sport, and he was happy the way the association is getting players actively involved as was the case in the GT&T nationwide softball competition.
Meanwhile, the winning team will receive $500,000 and a trophy, while the runners-up will take home $200,000 and a trophy, and the two semi-finalists $50,000 each and a trophy. Winners from each county will receive $10,000 while several individual prizes are on offer.
Royston Rajpaul of GT&T, who is one of the major sponsors of the competition, stated that his communications company was extremely pleased to be associated with the tapeball league.
Aneeta Shivprashad, Marketing Manager of GTM, also mentioned that her insurance company is always prepared to contribute towards the development of sports, and they were happy to be on board. Andrea Jodhan-Khan, Marketing Coordinator of Hand-in-Hand, mentioned about her company’s support to sports generally in Guyana and wished the various teams’ success in the competition. She admired the initiative by GTA, and thought it was excellent to run off another big nationwide tournament.
President of the GTL, and the Guyana Softball League, Halim Khan, in his remarks, thanked the sponsors on board, while he promised that his association will ensure they run off another successful, local tournament.
