After a keenly contested tournament where six players finished on four points each, Moen Gafoor distinguished himself from the bunch amassing 5 points and a positive spread of 569 to cart off the top prize when the Guyana association of Scrabble Players staged its Independence Open Championship at the Chamber of Commerce Building, Waterloo Street, North Cummingsburg.
Ulric Harris was the next best contestant winning four games with a positive spread of 448 while Floyd Carmichael once again proved that he can be a dangerous player on his day. He strolled into the tournament more than half an hour late after traveling from Berbice, missed the first game but went on to notch up four games and a positive spread of 387 to close off the podium positions.
Former national champion Fred Collins found the going tough and amidst a group of enthusiastic players finished in the fourth position with 4 games and a positive spread of 353. Three other players ended the tournament on four points but were eliminated from the winners’ row by dint of lower positive spreads. They are Orlando Michael (136), Nicholas grant (75) and Michael Benjamin (67).
Meanwhile, the GASP will hold its Annual General Meeting (AGM) on Sunday June 20, one week before the players travel to Linden to engage in the Earl Vigilance Memorial. Vigilance was one of the top players who died in an industrial accident in the Mining Town four years ago. Members are reminded that they will be debarred from participating in the AGM if their dues are not up to date.
