Annual Day of Sports set for ‘D’ Field Sophia

Masters ½ Marathon from Buxton feature event
The annual Corn Jam and day of Sports is fixed for ‘D’ Field Sophia from noon on Sunday April 4.
The highlight of this year’s event is expected to be the Over-50 Masters Half Marathon from the village of Buxton on the East Coast of Demerara to Sophia. This race is set to commence at 16:30hrs and the winner will take home $20,000 and the 2nd placed finisher $10,000. The person who occupies the 3rd position will collect $5,000.
The day of activities is being organized by Carlton Stephenson and Shellon Whyte and several trophies and cash prizes are up for grabs.
Stephenson said that this year softball cricket, Circle Tennis and Five-side-football have been added to the event which starts with the cricket competition which ahs a 1st prize of $11,000 and a case of Guinness.
The football tournament is next and the winning team will get $5,000 and a trophy, the runner-up $3,000 and a trophy and each member of the 3rd placed team a fruit beverage.
The winner of the Circle Tennis competition takes home $11,000 plus medals while four races will be held before the Master half Marathon.
A BMX Bicycle is up for grabs for the winners of the Girls Under-15 100 metres dash while a cell phone will be given to the girl who finishes 2nd and a Wrist Watch to the 3rd place finisher. A BMX Bike will also be presented to the Boys Under-17 100 metres race winner with the runner-up getting a trophy and $1,000 and the 3rd place finisher a trophy and $1,000.
The 100 metres Boys Open event is expected to attract plenty of attention and the winner will get a cell phone and the runner-up a wrist Watch. The person in 3rd position will receive a trophy.
A mountain Bike goes to the winner of the Cross Country (around Sophia) race while the person in 2nd place gets a cell phone and the person who places 3rd a wrist watch.
Admission is free and music will be provided by Lion Heart and Subway Sound System and the Stephenson, who provides boil and roast corn for various events, explained that next year a ‘Corn Festival’ will be held along with the day of sports where various corn products will be on exhibition.
