GCB says it’s ready to host One-Day matches

Officials of the Guyana Cricket Board (GCB) held a Meeting with the media yesterday seeking its co-operation to help disseminate pertinent information relating to the hosting of the Guyana leg of the Zimbabwe tour.

Among those present at the occasion which was held in the GCB Boardroom were Public Relations Executive Terry Holder, Vice-Presidents Bissoondial Singh and Faizal Bacchus, Secretary Anand Sanasie and Chairman of Selectors Claude Raphael.

Members of the GCB and Scotia Bank’s Products & Marketing Manager Jennifer Cipriani meet with the media yesterday in the GCB Boardroom.

The Zimbabweans are here in Guyana to play two one-day matches against the West Indies with the first scheduled to be played tomorrow and the second on Saturday, at the National Stadium.

According to Raphael, who has responsibility for Security during the staging of the matches, he said that the two games are being used as a simulation test to ascertain this country’s readiness to stage the upcoming ICC T20 World Cup which begins in April.

“We know that the security aspect is a major concern for the public so we are here today to give an update on the current status of preparations so that you (media) can apprise the public about our plans for a safe delivery,” Raphael stated.

He disclosed that the security network involves the Guyana Police Force, the GCB and Private Security.

He added that items such as guns, glass bottles and knives will not be allowed into the Stadium and the GCB is urging all patrons not to attempt to bring those prohibited items into the arena to save any embarrassment and undue delay.

Raphael is also warning that there will be heavy security presence within the confines of the Stadium.

Acting President Bacchus, who deputised for President Chetram Singh said that they are indeed happy to have been chosen to host the matches, adding that they are quite aware of the challenges associated with hosting, but are ready to step up to the task.

Holder in his comments pointed out that no one will be permitted to leave the venue after entering the Stadium, stating that this is standard procedure all around the world right now, especially in light of the fact that almost all the necessities are usually in place now.

Meanwhile, both Sanasie and Singh reported that ticket sales are improving after a slow start and they expect it to stay that way until match day.

Tickets are being sold at the GCB Head Office on Regent Street, while it will also be available on match days from 07:00 hrs.

Also present at the Meeting was Scotia Bank’s Products & Marketing Manager Jennifer Cipriani, who spoke about the entity’s celebration of its 12th year of involvement in Kiddy Cricket.

She said that it is a glorious accomplishment to achieve another great milestone since being the exclusive sponsor of the initiative.

According to Cipriani, the Bank’s involvement in West Indies cricket first bean in 1998 as the official Bank of WI cricket and that was followed the next year by them being the exclusive sponsor of Kiddy Cricket.

Former WI pacer Reon King, who co-ordinated the programme reported on the current state of the competition which was run nationwide and involved 209 schools.

The schools that emerged as champions from their respective areas are: St. Agnes (Georgetown); Grove Primary (Upper Demerara / East Bank Demerara); Golden Grove (East Coast Demerara); St. John’s the Baptist (Essequibo Islands / Bartica); Sparta (Essequibo Coast); #48 (Berbice) and Meten-Meer-Zorg (East Bank Essequibo / West Demerara).

The Mahaica / Mahaicony / West Berbice winner is yet to be determined.
