Mings Products & Services Ltd Administrative Assistant Sherry Mars hands over the cheque to GLTA’s Duane Lopes in the presence of participants last Friday.
– Sponsors tournament for players over 30 years
In what was another clear demonstration of its commitment to sports, Mings Products & Services Ltd Administrative Assistant Sherry Mars, during a simple ceremony held last Friday at the Everest Sports Club, handed over a sponsorship cheque on behalf of the Company to Assistant Secretary Treasurer of the Guyana Lawn Tennis Association (GLTA) Duane Lopes.
Mars in her brief remarks said that the entity was extremely pleased to be associated with the tournament and extended best wishes to all the players.
GLTA President Christopher Ram in his comments thanked the Company for its support, adding that such support is another signal that the sport is on the rebound.
He also recognised the efforts of members of Everest Sports Club who he disclosed were making a valiant attempt to resuscitate the game at its headquarters.
“I would like to say that the occasion here signals the return of Everest as a tennis venue and it has therefore become an additional component of the club catering for not only the seniors, but the juniors as well,” Ram stated.
He also noted the appeal by Club Captain Feroze Mohamed, who called on the GLTA for financial assistance to improve the dilapidated court and its surroundings which he said could cost in the vicinity of some $4million.
Ram pointed out that his plea was hear and the GLTA was very sympathetic to their need, but was in no position right now to offer such help.
“I would like you to read a recent article printed in the newspapers which referred to our discussions during a Meeting with the Minister of Sport and you will see that we had asked him to give us 1% of the 2010 National Sports Budget of $550 million, but was told that there was absolutely no room in the budget for any contribution to tennis.”
He, however, pledged the GLTA’s support for any other endeavour.
Ram suggested that the two entities could organise fund raisers together in order to realise the sum needed to restore the facility and also advised that that they advertise tennis as an added segment to the club’s activities.
Mohamed, while calling on the GLTA for help said that it was the intention of the club to get that arm up and going, especially catering for the youths.
He, however, revealed that a significant sum is required to improve the surface and backboards which the club cannot afford right now.
Meanwhile the tournament which is opened for players above the age of 30 started on Friday with matches being played at the Pegasus Hardcourts.
