Negatively handicapped players suffer on opening night

Action in this year’s Bounty Farm sponsored Handicap Squash Tournament commenced on Tuesday evening at the Georgetown Club courts with players who were negatively handicapped unable to overcome their deficits.
The first tournament on the Guyana Squash Association’s busy schedule, seeks to level the playing field by adjusting players start scores according to their ability. The tournament is split into two categories, the Open Category for the more accomplished players and the A Category for novices and intermediate players and among the notable losers on opening night were former Caribbean junior champion Alexander Arjoon, who lost to veteran Joe Mekdeci and his junior team-mate Deje Dias, who fell to Andrew Arjoon.
Andrew Arjoon (+10) stuck to his game plan of short fast rallies to ensure that, one of last year’s national junior team heroes, Deje Dias (-15) didn’t make it out of the negatives, while Joe Mekdeci (+6) continued the night of dominance for the veterans when he kept his composure to defeat Alexander Arjoon (-25) 15/-9 11/15 15/-6.
The most positively handicapped player remaining in the Open Category main draw after last night’s action is David Fernandes with +12, while Regan Pollard at -25 is the most negatively handicapped player remaining.

Last evening was expected to witness an intriguing match between junior national players and siblings Ashley and Jason Ray Khalil in the second round of the Open Category.
The action continues every evening from 18:00 hrs until the finals on Saturday.
