Dear Editor,
Darren Sammy recent appointment as Windward Islands captain for the Regional One Day tournament (the President’s Cup) scheduled for Guyana starting the (today) October 28 made him the second St. Lucian to lead the Windward Islands at the Senior Regional level.
Sammy joins present Chairman of Selectors Julian Charles who became the first St. Lucian to be appointed Windward Captain in 1989 to 1992. Charles who toured Zimbabwe with the Carlisle best led West Indies (B) Team in 1986 and had the highest first class score on that tour 186 against Zimbabwe President’s XI, is also the first St. Lucian to score a Regional first class century for the Windward Islands.
He scored 114 against Guyana at Rose Hall 1986 and if Darren is too young to remember, Charles is the first man to bring the bacon home for the Windwards. JC was at the helm when the Windwards won its first Regional Championship, the Geddes Grant Shield defeating Guyana in the final at Queens Park in Grenada 1989, former West Indies (A) Team player John Eugene also led the Windward Islands on a few occasions but that was when the appointed Vincentian Dawnley Joseph was unavoidably absent.
Only time will tell if Sammy could become the second St, Lucian to lift the Windward Islands to their third Regional title.
The last time folks in St. Vincent & Grenadines, St. Lucia, Grenada and Dominica celebrated was (2000) when Grenadian Rawle Lewis hoisted the Red Stripe Bowl Trophy at Sabina Park, Kingston.
